The Hootenanny 2009 - Oak Canyon Ranch, Ca.

This year on July 4th The Hootenanny is going to be a scorcher with the red hot Reverend Horton Heat headlining the show! The long and not to be outdone undercard is just as sweltering with Lee Rocker of Stray Cat fame, rockabilly knock out out freight train The Blasters from Downey, Ca., and East L.A.'s own, incredible, legends in their own time, maestros of the mix, with new album on hand, Los Lobos. Last time I was graced with the crisp hybrid East LA sound of Los Lobos was at E… Continue

Brubeck @ Toronto Jazz July 1st

Four score and eight years ago, one of the fore fathers of the modern jazz era was born. Dave Brubeck, best known for compositional inventiveness employing uncommon time signatures, is now eighty-eight and still thriving.

It is now just past the fiftieth anniversary of the release of the album Time Out with its immortal hit “Take Five”. The album sold platinum in 1959 and continues to sell, as any record collection – jazz-based or otherwise – would be incomplete without it.

He takes the main s… Continue

MMW mind-blowing (T.O. Jazz Fest)

Midway through the set, the large black speaker array stage-left became my monolithic overlord.
It spoke stentorianly, in mellotronic clusters and moog-ified squonks, of hidden passageways to our parallel vibrating universe.
A Hofner slide through Junkyard summed-up Radiolarians’ inter-stellar missive.
Medeski Martin and Wood may have been playing their instruments, but the transmission was from elsewhere.
(I’ve since lined the walls and ceiling of my bedroom with tin foil – shiny side out).

All About Groove – MMW @ Toronto Jazz Fest

New York trio Medeski Martin and Wood – names synonymous with groove and good times – play the main stage of the Toronto Jazz Festival tonight!

For those still not in the know, their music is designed to stimulate the cerebral cortices while simultaneously causing one’s booty to shake. A cross-section of the audience counts equal numbers of toques and hoodies to salt and pepper pony-tails. In the past they’ve incorporated hip-hop elements - including turn-tables - into their music, and over rec… Continue

Sonny Rollins Opens Toronto Jazz Festival

After the demise of Charlie Parker and before the rise of John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins was regarded as the finest saxophonist in jazz. Playing with Miles Davis in the mid 1950’s, Rollins helped define be-bop as we know it today; and now, approaching his eightieth (!) birthday, Sonny is a testament to the fact that great music has rejuvenating power.

And don’t get the idea that age has muted his exuberance. I saw him at the Montreal Jazz Festival three years ago and the performance was full of l… Continue
